LAUREN BERLANT

Sex in the Event of Happiness

Lauren Berlant is the George M. Pullman Professor of English at the University of Chicago, and the author of The Anatomy of National Fantasy (Chicago, 1991); The Queen of America Goes to Washington City: Essays on Sex and Citizenship (Duke, 1997), The Female Complaint: The Unfinished Business of Sentimentality in American Culture (2009); and, most recently, Cruel Optimism (2011). Focusing on the affective components of citizenship and belonging in the U.S., she examines practices of intimacy as they absorb legal, normative, and fantasmatic forces.
