Writing Elizabeth Bishop: A Biographer’s Journey

Thomas Travisano, the President of the Elizabeth Bishop Society, will speak about his forty-year-long journey across three continents that led to his new biography from Viking / Penguin, Love Unknown: The Life and Worlds of Elizabeth Bishop.

Thomas Travisano, the founding president of the Elizabeth Bishop Society, is the author of Elizabeth Bishop: Her Artistic Development and of Midcentury Quartet: Bishop, Lowell, Jarrell, Berryman. His new biography Love Unknown: The Life and Worlds of Elizabeth Bishop appears from Viking / Penguin in November. Travisano is the principal editor of Words in Air: The Complete Correspondence Between Elizabeth Bishop and Robert Lowell and the co-editor of Elizabeth Bishop in the 21st Century, as well as the three-volume New Anthology of American Poetry. Travisano is Professor Emeritus of English at Hartwick College. His biography of Elizabeth Bishop was supported by a 2013 Guggenheim Fellowship and by awards from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Philosophical Society.
