‘Social death’, ‘empty shell’, ‘everlasting funeral’, ‘living dead’—these are the terms that are often used to talk about persons living with Alzheimer’s Disease (aka AD). The MemoryShift conference was designed to surface the effects of this devastating discourse and the ways in which it imposes suffering, denies persons living with AD their dignity, and excludes them from participation in society. Moreover, the conference aims to reexamine the ways in which we think of pathological memory loss and SHIFT our thought patterns that will in turn, change the language that we use to talk about AD and thus potentially improve the lives of persons living with Alzheimer’s.
