THE MAGIC OF THINGS

Tuesday 1 March, 7:00 p.m.
Innis Town Hall, 2 Sussex Avenue

……..

Ever since Marcel Mauss, we have known that things carry magical properties which add a mysterious element to our social lives. This magical element is the basis for many forms of fetish, for the peculiar hunger that leads to material excess, for the appeal of austerity and asceticism in many religious traditions and for the role of things in memory, mimesis and ritual of every type. This lecture seeks to identify the conditions that endow things with an
aura which transcends utility.
