This question along with others will be addressed in a new Writing Workshop on criticism and truth, close reading, and its ties to the craft of writing, and the use of in-sentence quotation as method to stitch together a sentence and make a compelling, convincing, and perhaps truthful statement.

Dear MA and PhD students in Art History and Comparative Literature,

Please join us on Friday, November 19th, 2021, from 11AM to 1PM for a Writing Workshop that will explore the questions and topics mentioned above. Registration is not required.

The session will begin with a discussion of Jonathan Kramnick’s recent article “Criticism and Truth,” Critical Inquiry 47 (Winter 2021) (see attached). Then we will explore our own close reading and critical writing practices with each other.

You are asked to read Kramnick’s article and to bring a sample of your writing in which you use in-sentence quotation. “That is,” as Kramnick defines it, “the practice of placing language from the text one is discussing inside the sentence one is writing in such a way that accommodates the formal economy of each” (221).

The session will be held via Zoom, and the meeting link is provided below. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Prof. Ricco.

We look forward to seeing you on the 19th!

Very best,
John and Heba
