“Come here…I want to see you”
Show and Tell Alexander Bell is a post-dramatic homage to Alexander Graham Bell’s 1876 invention and a quizzical tribute to the robotic contraptions that followed in its wake. Inspired by a desire to communicate with his mother Eliza and wife Mabel, this bearded Canadian star dreams up a device to fulfill his dream of aural contact with the ones he loves.
The Graduate Centre for Study of Drama is pleased to present this production with Ars Mechanica, a company dedicated to a process of theatrical creation and experimentation through an exploration of historical narratives mediated through new technology.
This 21st century aesthetic is wired. The inventors of Ars Mechanica take its viewer on a journey through Bell’s trans-Atlantic circuit. Here, in the spaces of dropped calls, crossed lines, and lost messages, anything is possible. Envision a cyborg theatre- a performance where technology becomes like, and is bound to, our bodies through its presence, power, and propensity for power outage.
