Machine learning algorithms, as they currently exist, are verified as true only if they repeat the often incomplete and inaccurate information they are fed, within certain standard deviations. Simply put: they are tested on their ability to predict the captured past, not the future. Truth and learning in these automated systems are reduced to plausibility and consistence, which seems to foreclose the possibility of significantly different futures that learn from—rather than repeat—past mistakes and injustices.  If this is so, what can we do? In this seminar, we will start addressing this question by analyzing how training changes history and how we might use and conceive of these systems differently.
